Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood, when people experience rapid physical, psychological, and social development. It’s often associated with the teenage years.

Here are some things to know about adolescence:

  • Brain development: Adolescence is a time of significant brain development, second only to infancy. These changes prepare the brain for the challenges of adulthood, but they can also make adolescents more vulnerable to risk behaviors and mental health issues.
  • Physical changes: Adolescents experience growth spurts and puberty changes, such as sexual maturation.
  • Identity exploration: Adolescents become more independent and begin to explore their identity.
  • Moral compass: Adolescents develop their own moral compass.
  • Substance use: Adolescents may be more sensitive to substances like alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis, and exposure to these substances can have long-lasting effects.
  • Health responsibilities: As adolescents enter adolescence, their parents are still largely responsible for their health, but by the end of adolescence, the young person is almost entirely responsible.

Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to 19. It is a unique stage of human development and an important time for laying the foundations of good health. Adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth.

“Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to adulthood. Adolescence is usually associated with the teenage years, but its physical, psychological or cultural expressions may begin earlier or end later.”  (ACNRC)
