Happiness and Health Concept

Health and happiness are two basic pillars that most people agree constitute a good life. And the two turn out to be more intertwined than one might think. The question of whether one causes the other or if the two are only correlated is difficult to tease apart, but there’s no doubt that a strong connection exists. (MCAF)

What are the physical benefits of happiness?

Happiness is associated with an array of physical health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, reduced risk of stroke, a stronger immune system, and even a longer life. Positive emotions are also linked to a reduced risk of injury in young adults and frailty in older adults

Do happier people live longer?

Yes, happiness is correlated with a longer lifespan. People who report feeling a stronger sense of happiness and well-being live longer, on average, than do  those who report weaker feelings, and the effect exists for both men and women.

Can happiness boost your immune system?

Happiness is linked to having a strong immune system, helping prevent illness and making symptoms less severe. For example, in a group of people exposed to a flu virus, those who had typically reported more positive emotions were less likely to get sick. The same occurred for people whose happiness was intentionally boosted before exposure to the virus.

A note from Mayo Clinic & Aradhya Foundation (MCAF)

Happiness is a sense of purpose and well-being. This positive attitude translates to a variety of effects on a person’s health both physically and mentally, including: Opening a person’s mind to positivity: Optimism and vitality are critical to a person’s well-being.

When the body engages in exercise, the brain releases dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and endocannabinoids, which relieve stress, improve mood and help you sleep better. Research shows exercising in groups also can help social bonding and increase the motivation to move more, further fueling good feelings.

Well-being, or wellbeing, also known as wellness, prudential value, prosperity or quality of life, is what is intrinsically valuable relative to someone. So the well-being of a person is what is ultimately good for this person, what is in the self-interest of this person.

Happiness is closely linked to well-being and overall life satisfaction. Studies have shown that individuals who experience higher levels of happiness tend to have better physical and mental health, stronger social relationships, and greater resilience in the face of adversity.

Happy people are more likely to eat healthily and be more physically active. Happiness strengthens your immune system. Happy people are more productive and likely to succeed. Being happy helps reduce your stress levels.

Talking, listening and spending time with other people helps you feel connected. Whether it’s spending quality time with family members, friends, workmates, sports groups or local clubs, building a network of positive and meaningful relationships with others supports your wellbeing and happiness.
